  3. Eudora Light for Windows

  10. This is the freeware version of Eudora for Windows. There is also a
  11. commercial version of Eudora called Eudora Pro (Version 2.0 and
  12. above).  If you would like information about the commercial version, a
  13. brief description is provided in the Help menu of this freeware.  Select
  14. About Eudora Pro to display this dialog. You can also subscribe to
  15. the QUALCOMM Enterprise Software Technologies (QUEST) mailing list by
  16. selecting QUEST News from the Help menu.  This list will provide
  17. subscribers with occasional information about Eudora, Eudora Pro,
  18. and other QUEST products.

  20. The latest version of Eudora Light can be found on ftp.qualcomm.com, 
  21. in the directory quest/windows/eudora/1.5.  The Windows freeware 
  22. user manual can also be found on ftp.qualcomm.com, in the directory
  23. quest/windows/eudora/documentation.  The user manual is formatted 
  24. in Word for Windows version 2.0 format.

  27. Minimum Requirements
  28. --------------------

  30. Eudora Light requires the following:
  31.  
  32. -  IBM PC or compatible.
  33. -  Microsoft Windows 3.1 for 16-bit version; Microsoft Windows 95 
  34.    or Windows NT 3.51 for 32-bit version.
  35. -  Winsock 1.1 API compliant networking package (not needed for 
  36.    serial connection).
  37. -  A mail account with an Internet Service Provider or an 
  38.    Internet-style network.
  39. -  Access to your mail account via a modem (9600 bps or higher recommended) 
  40.    or Internet-style network connection.
  41. -  Microsoft (or compatible) mouse (highly recommended)
  42. -  At least 2M of free disk space (more depending on mailbox sizes)

  47. Installation
  48. ------------

  50. To install Eudora, download the software archive (eu154b11.exe) into a 
  51. directory on your PC. Double click on the archive to unpack it into the 
  52. same directory, then follow these directions:
  53.  
  54. 1.  Exit any applications you are running.
  55.  
  56. 2.  In the Windows Explorer or File Manager, double-click on Setup.exe 
  57.     to start the Setup program.
  58.  
  59. 3.  Read the Welcome screen, then click Next.
  60.  
  61. 4.  Specify a directory to install Eudora, or your current Eudora 
  62.     directory if you have one, then click Next. 
  63.         
  64. 5   Specify which version of Eudora you wish to install, then click
  65.     Next.  If you are unsure of which version to install, follow the 
  66.     recommendation made by the Setup program.  
  67.         
  68.     If you choose to install the 32-bit version of Eudora but do not
  69.     have 32-bit TCP/IP software, you will receive an error message. 
  70.     The 32-bit version will not work without 32-bit TCP/IP software,
  71.     so you are given the option to install the 16-bit version instead.

  73. 6.  Verify that the displayed settings are correct, then click Next 
  74.     (or use the Back button if you need to go back and make changes).  
  75.  
  76. 7.  Eudora is installed in the destination directory, and you are 
  77.     prompted for whether or not you want to view the README file.
  78.     Click Yes.

  80. Note:   Always keep the Help file in the same directory as the executable.

  84. Configuration
  85. -------------

  87. The first time you run Eudora you will have to edit some of the
  88. configuration information in order to be able to send and receive mail.
  89.  
  90. Select Options... from the Tools Menu.
  91.  
  92. The fields you need to review are:
  93.  
  94. POP Account:  To use Eudora, you must have an account on a computer that
  95. runs a POP3 server.  This is the account to which your e-mail messages are
  96. delivered before they are transferred to the Eudora program on your PC.  In
  97. this field, type your login name for this account and the full (domain)
  98. name of the computer, separating them with an "@" sign.  For example, if
  99. your assigned login name is "carolyn," and the name of the computer where
  100. you receive e-mail is "uxh.cso.uiuc.edu," type "carolyn@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu"
  101. in this field.
  102.  
  103. Real Name:  Type your real name.  Your name, as it appears here, is
  104. displayed in parentheses after your return address in your outgoing mail.
  105. It is also displayed in the sender column of all messages you send.
  106.  
  107. SMTP Server:  To send mail, a computer with an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer
  108. Protocol) server program is necessary.  You need not have a login to this
  109. computer, but you must have access to it through your network.  If the
  110. computer on which you have your POP account is also an SMTP server, leave
  111. this field blank.  Otherwise, specify the name of the computer you want to
  112. use as your SMTP server.
  113.  
  114. Return Address:  Normally, Eudora uses your POP account as your return
  115. address.  If you wish to use a return address other than your POP account,
  116. enter it here.

  119. If you have the New Mail Notification "Sound" switch on, then when new mail
  120. arrives, you will hear a notification sound.  In order for this to work,
  121. your system must have a properly configured sound board, or you must have
  122. installed the Sound Driver for PC-Speaker (anonymous ftp from
  123. ftp.qualcomm.com the file /quest/windows/utils/SPEAK.EXE).  Eudora has a
  124. built-in sound, but if you wish to supply your own, it must be in .WAV
  125. format.  To change the default new mail sound, select the Settings... menu
  126. item in the Special menu, and then select the Getting Attention category.
  127. Select the button under the "Play a sound" checkbox, and a dialog will
  128. prompt you for the sound file.

  130. Note that this driver will only work for the Windows 3.X operating system.
  131. It will not work for Windows NT or Windows 95.

  133. If the mail you are sending is bouncing back to you saying that the message
  134. does not have a Date: header, add the following entry to your EUDORA.INI
  135. file:

  138. TimeZone=xxxnnnyyy

  140. where xxx, yyy are timezone abbreviations like PST, PDT, CDT, and nnn is
  141. the offset in hours WEST of GMT (i.e., those that are east of GMT should
  142. enter a negative number here).  xxx is the timezone during Standard Time
  143. and yyy is the timezone during Daylight Savings Time.  If you do not change
  144. your clocks during Daylight Savings Time, leave yyy blank.
  145. Here's some samples:

  147.      TimeZone=EST5EDT
  148.      TimeZone=MET-1

  150. If you don't specify a TimeZone entry, then a Date: header will not be put
  151. in outgoing messages, which is fine for most users because their mail
  152. server will insert the correct Date: header.  The moral is - if you don't
  153. get messages bounced because of a missing Date: header, then leave the
  154. TimeZone entry alone.

  158. TCP/IP Services
  159. ---------------

  161. Eudora makes use of several different TCP/IP services, and has default port
  162. numbers for these services.  Most sites put these services on the default
  163. ports, but some may not.  Contact your site network administrator to make
  164. sure that the following services listed below are indeed on the default
  165. port numbers.  If they aren't, you'll have to make some changes to some
  166. configuration file(s) in your TCP/IP package (usually to a SERVICES file).
  167.  
  168. Below are a list of the services which Eudora uses, and what they might
  169. look like in a typical services file.  The names of these services must be
  170. exactly as named here (e.g., the entry for the POP3 service must be "pop3"
  171. and not "pop-3").  Make sure that you make any changes necessary for your
  172. TCP/IP package to specify the location of the SERVICES file.

  175.         smtp      25/tcp

  177. To receive mail:
  178.         pop3      110/tcp

  180. To use Ph (if your site has a Ph server):
  181.         csnet-ns  105/tcp

  183. To use Finger (if your site supports finger):

  186. To use the Change Password... function in Eudora, your site must have a
  187. password changing server installed.  See the directory
  188. quest/unix/servers/password on ftp.qualcomm.com for examples of password
  189. changing servers):

  192. There are also entries in the [Settings] section of the EUDORA.INI
  193. file for default port numbers of services.  These are provided for setups
  194. in which the SERVICES file cannot be modified.  Do not use these entries
  195. unless the services are not on default port numbers and you cannot modify
  196. them in your TCP/IP package.  Here are sample INI entries:

  220. report it by sending a message to pc-eudora-bugs@qualcomm.com. Describe what
  221. you did, what happened, what version of Eudora you have, any error messages
  222. Eudora gave (the numbers in ()'s are especially important), what kind of
  223. computer you have, which operating system you're using, and
  224. anything else you think might be relevant.

  264. good choice, as I like to see all the interesting places that Eudora is
  265. being used.  Humorous or unusual postcards are a favorite of mine, and you
  266. never know when I may decide that someone's postcard was interesting enough
  267. to make them a tester for the commercial version of Eudora.
